Who is the Zoe, Akyea & Co. Lawyer?

The success of our Firm is built on recruiting and developing pupils of the highest calibre who have the potential to become associates.

We consider applications strictly in accordance with our Pupillage Policy and on the basis of the Career Application Form and performance at interview.

Offers of pupillage are made to outstanding candidates who demonstrate the potential and aptitude to become excellent lawyers at Zoe, Akyea & Co. and are assessed by our Careers Committee.

What we assess—our core criteria

  • Intellectual excellence, incisive analytical ability, and strong written communication.
  • Oral advocacy and communication skills, which are often evidenced through mooting, debating, teaching, or pro bono experience; performance at interview is central.
  • Temperament and professional judgement—including interpersonal skills, commercial awareness, motivation, maturity, and the ability to work independently.

As a general guide, applicants are unlikely to reach the second round without a first-class or high 2:1 at the undergraduate law level.

We will, however, always consider the full context of achievement, including any extenuating circumstances disclosed.

In addition to degree results, we welcome evidence of intellectual excellence through outstanding postgraduate performance or other exceptional academic accomplishments.

How we recognise potential

We look for individuals who can convert a strong academic record into pragmatic legal and technical skills.
At a minimum, a pupil must demonstrate critical thinking, rigorous analysis, and clear problem-solving under time pressure.

We value initiative, professionalism, teamwork, and the judgment to know when to collaborate and when to take ownership. We also prize resilience, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm amid complexity and deadlines; adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and confidence in unfamiliar settings.

Advocacy and expression: We expect persuasive, structured written work and the ability to defend a position with clarity and economy in conference, correspondence, and court.

Commercial awareness: Our clients expect trusted advisers who understand how businesses operate; you should be comfortable “speaking the client’s language” and translating legal analysis into practical, outcome-focused advice—rounded perspective: Intellectual curiosity matters. We welcome interests outside the law that build judgement, empathy, and perspective with clients and colleagues.

Fairness, inclusion, and how we recruit

We recruit the strongest candidates regardless of background or personal circumstances. There is no single mould for success here; our lawyers come from a variety of routes and experiences, and all are valued.

Our assessment process is designed to be rigorously fair and objective, drawing on input from a broad range of colleagues against our criteria.

For consistency, we apply the same high bar when selecting interns, pupils, and associates. In addition to the core criteria above, we look for:

  • Expressive ability (written and oral), including the capacity to argue persuasively and with courtesy.
  • Commitment, drive, efficiency, and resilience, with habits that sustain excellence over time.
  • Genuine interest in one or more of our practice areas.

Our training ethos

We are not looking for a “finished article.” Pupillage at Zoe, Akyea & Co. is a demanding, structured year of education, support, and development, grounded in our values of excellence, reliability, integrity, and innovation.

You will work closely with experienced practitioners, receive frank feedback, and be encouraged to challenge conventional thinking while upholding the highest professional standards our clients expect.

The outcome we seek

Our focus is simple: to identify and invest in people with the best potential to become excellent lawyers at Zoe, Akyea & Co.—professionals who bring clarity to complex problems, earn client trust, and advance the interests of the Firm and the rule of law.
