Our Internship Program

At Zoe, Akyea & Co., we offer an innovative internship program that combines practical, theoretical, and in-depth work experience with targeted professional development and training.

Our internship programme is essentially a simulated pupillage that grants exposure to legal matters, legal research, and client advisory across our practice areas.

Internship Program Overview

We aim to provide students in our internship program with a taste of work in a successful, modern legal practice. Interns will gain valuable insight into the working life, benefits, and burdens of a practising lawyer in a busy office environment.

The primary goal of our program is for interns to come away feeling knowledgeable about what a career in law could look like and equipped with the confidence to take the next steps should they decide it is the right path for them.

What does our internship program entail?

We provide a learning environment for local and international students, where interns can work in our practice groups and gain valuable insights into life at Zoe, Akyea & Co.

We value the experiences gained from working with lawyers from diverse backgrounds and other jurisdictions. Hence, we encourage exchange programmes between our lawyers and other international law firms.

Interns will usually be assigned to one or two members of the Firm who will coordinate their internship. We endeavour to ensure that interns experience a range of work at different levels, and thus, interns may also have the opportunity to handle the work of other lawyers.

If an intern wishes to experience a specific area of our expertise, we will do our best to accommodate this.

Interns shall typically attend court hearings, review legal documents, draft opinions, conduct legal research and shadow highly experienced members of the Firm as they carry out their work.

The cornerstone of our internship program is our Pro Bono Clinic, where our interns’ first assignments involve meeting with and counselling real clients, providing them with a clear picture of the day-to-day life of a lawyer.

Interns will have the chance to speak to other members of the Firm and our current pupils about life in private practice. They will also be granted the opportunity to attend Firm events, seminars, and advocacy workshops and partake in ad hoc administrative duties.

Why should I apply for an internship?

We believe in developing young lawyers and providing them with the resources to achieve their personal and professional goals.

An internship is the best way for potential pupillage applicants to gain an introduction to the Firm, experience the workplace culture of Zoe, Akyea Co., and learn more about what pupillage with us would be like.

It is not necessary to have undertaken an internship at the Firm. However, we encourage those interested in pupillage to apply, as it also allows us to make a realistic assessment of whether an intern would be a suitable candidate for pupillage at Zoe, Akyea & Co.

Internship Grant

We aim to ensure that internships are accessible to as many suitable candidates as possible and that candidates are not prevented from undertaking an internship due to their financial circumstances or personal costs.

To ensure that our internship program is fair and equitable to all, we may offer a small grant to interns on a case-by-case discretionary basis. For those who travel from afar, we may also arrange for exceptional travel costs to be reimbursed.

How to Apply

Applications for our Internship Program remain open throughout the year; however, placements are limited.

In order to facilitate internships for as large a pool of candidates as possible, we encourage potential applicants to apply to us as early as possible in the legal year in which they intend to apply for an internship.

Applicants should strike a balance between the need to apply early enough and the desire to have studied as much law as possible before applying. We apply the same criteria when selecting interns, pupils, and associates. You may fill out the application form on our main Careers page.

Feedback and Internship Blog

Interns will be asked to give feedback on their internship, and we will take this feedback into account as we continue developing our Internship Program.

Each intern is encouraged to tell us about their time at Zoe, Akyea & Co. for the benefit of other students.

Student Open Day

Every year, Zoe, Akyea & Co. hosts a Student Open Day.

Our Student Open Day is designed to provide undecided students and prospective lawyers with an insight into a career at the Bar, as well as a better understanding of who we are and what we do.

On our Student Open Day, we offer:

  • Advice sessions covering how to become a lawyer.
  • A round-table discussion on life and practice at the Bar by senior and junior lawyers.
  • A lunch meeting which provides an opportunity to meet several members of our Firm, network and discuss their practices in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
  • Talks from members of the Firm on applying for internships and pupillage, and how to put forward a robust application.
  • Talks on the pupillage period and life as an associate of the Firm.
  • A workshop session on advocacy skills led by lawyers at the Firm.

All university students are welcome to attend our Student Open Day. We particularly welcome those who have yet to study law or are in their first year of a law degree.

We will communicate the details of any events within the relevant year.
